Goliath

Berrocal Puzzle Sculpture

Miguel Berrocal is a contemporary Spanish artist who has created a number of sculptures that are both art and puzzle. His works were featured in the Mathematical Games section of Scientific American once in the late 1970's.

One of his larger works is called "Goliath". It was completed in 1972, and made available in a limited edition of 2000 cast in brass and 6 cast in solid silver. I have number 1361 of 2000. Goliath contains 80 pieces that fit together in intricate and ingenious ways. It is about 19 cm high (excluding the base) and weighs 11 kg (including the base). It is both a challenge and a pleasure to disassemble and reassemble the sculpture. It can be assembled in three slightly different variations: circumcised, uncircumcised, or fig leaf. I hope you enjoy these photos.
